What do tacos & marketing strategies have in common?

I just want to start this post by stating that my mind is thinking about food 75% of the time. I am a foodie through and through. I love creating recipes, trying out other people's recipes and ordering every appetizer at a restaurant.

And at the top of my all-time favorite foods list sits tacos.

The thing I love most about tacos is their versatility. Tacos for breakfast? Add eggs and avocado. Tacos for lunch? I’ll take two with carnitas. Tacos for dinner? Better make it three and add rice and beans. Tacos for desert? Smother those tortillas with cinnamon sugar and add fruit and whipped cream.

So while I was drooling over all the taco options in preparation for my Cinco De Mayo menu, I started thinking about the similarities between building the perfect taco and building the ideal marketing strategy.

So for the content no one asked for - here are the different types of tacos and how they relate to your marketing strategy.

What do tacos and marketing strategies have in commone

The Fast Food Taco

So you need a quick bite and order a taco from your local fast-food chain. First of all, the chances of that taco being correct is about a 50/50 shot. But then what you get is a smooshed, lukewarm, gummy mess that usually ends with a stomach ache.

This is the lack of strategy taco. This one is when you haven’t posted on social media in forever. You quickly jot down your thoughts, find the first image that works and hit send. Unfortunately, you are left with possible typos, not creating content that aligns with your goals and a stomach ache from staring at your non-engaging post.

The At Home Taco

If you are like me, Taco Tuesdays are a real thing. It’s the one day of the week that I can guarantee my kids will eat without a fight, and I get to enjoy a cold beer with a delicious dinner. Here’s how my At Home Tacos typically look. The kids keep it simple with meat, cheese and sour cream. The husband adds a bit more flair with guacamole and hot sauce, and me? Well, I add the whole shebang. Give me lettuce, pico, jalapenos and whatever other accouterment I can find in the fridge. We are all left happy and full, but with a mess of a kitchen to clean up. The At Home Taco looks different each week based on what I have in the fridge or what I’m feeling.

This is the build your own strategy. You’ve got the tools to plan out and create a robust strategy. However, that strategy is ever-changing depending on your current mood and doesn’t always stay consistent with your end-game goals. For example, you may include blog posts on some weeks, and on other weeks you might focus on social media. It’s consistent in the sense that it’s happening weekly, but it’s still a bit chaotic with creating real strategy and not to mention all the backend tasks.

The Perfect Taco

You know the one. It’s the taco that leaves you wanting more. The one that you crave on the daily and is perfect every time. My perfect taco comes from a local taco shop that starts with a corn tortilla layered with melty cheese, spicy carnitas, guacamole, diced onions and cilantro. Then, I take it over the edge by adding their spicy red salsa. My stomach just rumbled. The perfect taco probably looks different for you, as our tastes are all different. And that’s the beauty of the perfect taco. It’s not one size fits all.
